The so-called Skirball Fire was reported shortly before 5 a.m. near Mulholland Drive, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

As the fire burns northeast of the Getty Center and east of the 405 (San Diego) Freeway, the museum and other Center facilities are closed to the public.

Real estate agents of the wealthy Los Angeles Bel-Air neighborhood were watching homes and blocks of streets they know well go up in flames from their living room TVs this morning.

Thousands of people have fled their homes since the fires broke out on Monday.

The strong, desiccating Santa Ana winds have created ideal conditions for wildfires, by compressing hot air in the L.A. basin, and prompting the spread of embers well ahead of any fires that crop up.

The fire was reported at around 4:50 a.m. local time, according to CBS News.

LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas warned that the battle was likely to continue until at least Friday. All ramps along that stretch were also closed. Fixed-wing aircraft are unable to fly and gusts of up to 45 miles per hour are being felt, LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas said.

Mandatory Evacuations are in effect.

Misraje, who lives in the hills herself off Mulholland Drive, was staying put and telling her members and any clients to listen to authorities, stay in their homes if their area was not being evacuated to keep the roads free, and to stay inside to avoid the contaminated air.

But by early Tuesday afternoon, the eastern boundary of the evacuation area had been expanded to the Haynes Canyon area.

The newspaper said evacuations have been ordered in the Sullivan and Mandeville canyon area. Once those shelters reached capacity, pet owners were directed to take their large animals to the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.

All Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District schools will be closed Wednesday due to new fire developments. The southbound lanes of the 405 have since reopened.
