Google is hiring 10000 reviewers to clean up YouTube

YouTube Will Add More Human Moderators To Stop Its Child Exploitation Problem

This was due to the fact that there were videos with children that were the target of sexually inappropriate comments.

"Our advances in machine learning let us now take down almost 70 percent of violent extremist content within eight hours of upload and almost half of it in two hours and we continue to accelerate that speed", Wojcicki said.

Google has announced plans to increase its moderator team to 10,000 people next year, amid concerns over inappropriate content & child exploitation on YouTube.

Wojcicki said machine learning is helping Youtube's human reviewers remove almost five times as many videos than previously and that today, 98 per cent of the videos removed for violent extremism were flagged by machine-learning algorithms. Several reports stated that advertisers were not comfortable in placing their ads on YouTube thereafter.

At the time YouTube also said it was developing a way to redirect users searching specific keywords on the website to playlists featuring videos that counter extremist content.

"We want advertisers to have peace of mind that their ads are running alongside content that reflects their brand's values", she said.

In addition to getting 10,000 Google employees' help, YouTube also plans to conjure up stricter criteria to consult when deciding which channels are eligible for advertising.

Talking about the machine-learning program, Wojcicki noted that human reviewers are an essential part of removing content and training the machine-learning system because human judgment is significant in making "contextualized" decisions on content. She did not say how many people now monitor YouTube for offensive videos.

Wojcicki said 180,000 people would have had to work 40 weeks to assess the same amount of content.

"Because we have seen these positive results, we have begun training machine-learning technology across other challenging content areas, including child safety and hate speech", she said.

Susan Wojcicki, chief executive of YouTube, noted how the video site can be used for good but also has a dark side, allowing bad people spread harassment, harm and hate.

"As challenges to our platform evolve and change, our enforcement methods must and will evolve to respond to them".
