Ali Abdullah Saleh, the deposed president of Yemen who ruled for more than three decades, has died in the latest outbreak of violence in the country's civil war, members of Saleh's political party said Monday. Saleh on Saturday broke a three-year alliance with the Iran-backed Huthis, opening the door to negotiations with neighbouring Saudi Arabia for the lifting of a crippling blockade.
The fighting that led to Saleh's death also apparently allowed the Houthis gain control of the majority of Yemen's capital Sanaa.
Saleh's announcement was welcomed by the Saudi-led coalition, which has struggled to achieve any progress against the Houthi-Saleh alliance that had controlled most of northern Yemen since 2015 and forced president Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to flee into exile. He remained in the country, however, and continued to wield power from behind the scenes.
The rift appeared to be part of a plan by the Saudi-led coalition, which was fighting against the Houthis, to turn the tide of the war in their favor. Iran has denied the accusations.
The breakdown of the alliance has led the coalition to step up its bombing of Houthi positions, in support of Saleh's forces.
"In addition, the fault lines of the conflict pre-date Saleh's involvement with the Houthis and numerous foreign powers involved in the Yemeni conflict are driven by their own strategic interests in the region", he added.
