Warm Tuesday, but wet snow possible late this week

"The cold air will be coming in well behind the front", Griffin said.

High pressure will remain in control Monday, leading to sunny skies and comfortable temperatures.

However, the winds will switch round from the south-west to north-west dropping the temperature down to a chilly 4degC and a wind chill as low as minus 4degC.

Dale said there's no significant snowfall in the forecast but there is a chance for some snow showers Tuesday evening.

A clipper system late Friday into early Saturday could kick off snow showers across far north Alabama. Temperatures could rise by as few as six degrees for a partly sunny, 48-degree high Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. With cold air in place, moisture lifts up over that cold airmass and allows showers to overspread the area (something that could be an off/on thing Wednesday into early Friday).

Temperatures in Greater Boston will be in the mid-40s on Monday
National Weather Service Temperatures in Greater Boston will be in the mid-40s on Monday

"It's nothing brutally cold or especially unusual for this time of year", said Andrew Snyder, a meteorologist based at the National Weather Service office in Sterling, Va.

Mostly cloudy Saturday night, with lows in the upper teens (-7 degrees Celsius). Tuesday night should be mild and breezy as the rain will continue with the cold front crossing the region. Highs will reach the upper 40s. Anywhere from a half inch to one inch of total rainfall is expected area wide. The rain is developing ahead of a very strong cold front. Friday will be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 40s.

As the cold air catches up with the back edge of the rain, snow may briefly fall in the higher terrain of the central and northern Appalachian Mountains Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Be sure to dress for the late-day weather (windy and cold).

If you've been waiting for some true December weather, wait no longer!
