Shashi Kapoor: The child star who directed a Russian film

In the 1970s and 1980s, Kapoor acted in a string of Bollywood hits, some of which he co-starred in with actor Amitabh Bachchan, including Deewar (The Wall, 1975) and Namak Halaal (The Loyal Servant, 1982) besides Kabhie Kabhie.

Vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu said Kapoor will be remembered for the memorable roles he played in a number of films. The news of his death was confirmed by his nephew Randhir Kapoor, son of Raj Kapoor.

In 2011, Shashi Kapoor was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour, Times of India reported.

The actor's performance has been widely acknowledged and has been felicitated with several awards. He had been a renowned theatre personality and performed plays, along with his late wife Jennifer Kendal (sister of actress Felicity Kendal).

Raj Kapoor, who died in 1988, was also a famous Hindi cinema actor.

He is survived by two sons, Kunal and Karan, and a daughter, Sanjana, who takes care of the Prithvi Theatre, one of Mumbai's best known theatres.

He entered the Bollywood as a child artist in the late 1940s and appeared in Sangram (1950) and Dana Paani (1953). He also starred in other British and American films such as Pretty Polly ("A Matter Of Innocence" (1967)) opposite Hayley Mills, Siddhartha (1972), Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987), and Muhafiz (1994). He went on to immortalize characters like Prem Sagar in The Householder and Sanju in Shakespeare-Wallah respectively. His death has left generations of Bollywood fans shocked and grieving. He was also seen opposite Raakhee in films such as Kabhi Kabhie, Pighalta Aasman and Trishna.

Shashi Kapoor was diagnosed with a chest infection in 2014 and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after he complained of acute cough and breathlessness.
