Here's what an 8-team College Football Playoff would have looked like

Ohio State can only blame itself for missing this year's College Football Playoff: Two losses - especially an ugly one to unranked Iowa - knocked the Buckeyes out of contention.

The No. 1 Tigers will face the No. 4 Crimson Tide in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, and the No. 2 Sooners will play the No. 3 Bulldogs in the Rose Bowl Game Presented by Northwestern Mutual on January 1, as announced Sunday by the CFP selection committee.

The Buckeyes defeated the University of Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship 27-21.

Alabama was chosen despite not winning even its division title. "And I think that that consideration based on the kind of team they had then is very important". And the Tide's inclusion also means its the first time the playoff has taken two teams from the same conference.

He added: "The bottom line is we had a tough road loss". Clemson is making its third appearance. They also started the season 11-0 and fell a game short of the SEC Championship game. Quarterback Baker Mayfield is the favorite to win the award next weekend.

In fairness, the Seminoles would've made more noise this year had their starting quarterback stayed healthy, but you can't convince me that would've happened to an Oklahoma, Clemson, or - dare I say it - an Ohio State. Oklahoma makes the playoff for the second time, its first appearance since 2015. Ohio State was the first, being selected last season over Big Ten champion Penn State.

The committee favored a quality record over quality wins this year, and that's going to hurt college football fans more than anything.

That the most controversial playoff pick yet came down to these two teams made it an even juicer plotline.

Wisconsin finished in sixth place in the College Football Playoff rankings. The panel of 13 includes former and current athletic administrators, including the athletic director from Ohio State, and former coaches.

It goes without saying that Delany is someone who has a lot of clout in the overarching process of all this - though, clearly, he did not have enough to ultimately get Ohio State in over Alabama. Last year, Ohio State was involved in a bit of a controversy again when it didn't win its conference but got in.
