Russian Federation condemns North Korean latest missile launch

In some of his most robust comments on the subject to date, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also flatly rejected a US call to cut ties with Pyongyang over its nuclear and ballistic missile programme and said USA policy towards North Korea was deeply flawed.

Lavrov's remarks came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump said "additional major sanctions" will be imposed on North Korea in the wake of a ballistic missile test.

"If someone really wants to use force to, as the US representative to the United Nations put it, destroy North Korea.then I think that is playing with fire and a big mistake", Lavrov told reporters.

He added, however, that sanctions-Washington's go-to response to such situations-should not be a goal in themselves and should be used carefully to avoid worsening the humanitarian situation in North Korea.

Yesterday, Washington warned that North Korea's leadership will be "utterly destroyed" if war breaks out as it called on countries to cut all diplomatic and trade ties with North Korea.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry also raised "serious" concern about North Korea's new missile launch that violated the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.

"We have repeatedly stated that the pressure of sanctions has been exhausted", he told journalists in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. North Korea has been buying oil from Russian Federation as well but in much smaller amounts and continues to be dependent on Chinese supplies.

He urged the acceptance of a proposal made jointly by China and Russian Federation that would require North Korea to suspend nuclear activity and the USA and South Korea to halt joint military exercises in order to pave the way for talks.

North Korea, in an announcement broadcast on state TV, said this week it had successfully tested a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile called Hwasong-15. "We do think they could do more with the oil and we're really asking them to please restrain more of the oil, not cut it off completely", he said - a move that would nevertheless deal a crippling blow to Pyongyang's economy.

"We were encouraged by that approach, but suddenly they are conducting surprise military exercise in October, then November, now we announced in December", - said the Minister.

He also complained that the United States was "totally ignoring" a United Nations demand for talks with North Korea."I think it's a big mistake", said Mr Lavrov.

"Our diplomats will speak from a position of strength because we do have military options", he said.
