Natural disaster reported along East Coast, felt in NYC area

4.1 Magnitude Earthquake Rumbles DC Area

An natural disaster shook the region late Thursday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS said the quake hit at about 4:45 p.m. approximately 6 miles east-northeast of Dover, Delaware and at a depth of about 4.3 miles. It was then downgraded to a 4.1.

There have been no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The track, known for its Miles the Monster mascot and its reputation as one of NASCAR's toughest venues, responded to the quake with trademark bravado in a tweet.

According to visitors to the USGS website, the quake was felt as far north as New Milford, Connecticut and as far south as Chesapeake, Virginia.

There was widespread confusion for about two hours over the exact Richter scale measurement with multiple news outlets saying it ranged from a 4 all the way up to 5.1. The last time Philadelphia felt anything similar to this was 2011, when a 5.9 quake hit Virginia, causing broken windows and other minor destruction.

The station also writes that Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the USGS, says there is potential for aftershocks.

People said they felt shaking for about 10 seconds.

"I was talking with the other seismologists and we said, 'Wow, we don't ever remember a quake in DE, '" he said.

The jolt was strong enough in downtown Baltimore that a smattering of residents streamed out of office towers and into the streets.

SSgt Aaron Jenne with Dover Air Force Base Public Affairs said he and others weren't sure what it was when it happened, but everyone is thankful that it wasn't worse and for it being so close there was no damage.

We have a small favor to ask of you.

She said there were no signs of damage at the base, and no change was expected in its operations. "It was actually pretty scary and pretty surprising".

That quake, which occurred on August 23, forced the shutdown of the Washington Monument due to damage.
