Uber Admits 2.7m UK Users Had Data Stolen In Hack

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said in a statement: "This latest shocking development about Uber will alarm millions of Londoners whose personal data could have been stolen by criminals".

In the hack, 57 million Uber customers and drivers' details were compromised.

Uber spokeswoman Molly Spaeth said in an email the company is "committed to changing the way we do business".

The data breach resulted in almost 11,000 Washington Uber drivers having their data compromised.

Uber Technologies has informed Britain's data protection regulator that 2.7 million user accounts in the country were affected by a data breach in 2016.

Washington Attorney-General Bob Ferguson said that because the drivers' information that was accessed included names and license numbers, state law required Uber to notify them and his office within 45 days.

Ferguson's lawsuit is the first from a state, although attorneys general in New York, Missouri, Massachusetts, Connecticut and IL have begun investigations, and the city of Chicago and Cook County have filed a lawsuit.

The firm has said it has a total of five million active users and 50,000 drivers in the UK. "There is no excuse for keeping this information from consumers". Ferguson says that Uber did not notify his office until this month, more than a year after the breach.

The lawsuit seeks civil penalties in the millions of dollars.

The NPC considers Uber as a Personal Information Controller and should provide detailed information on the nature of the incident, the scope of measure, and the remedial measures taken.

It has also placed an information page within the Accounts and Payment Options menu within the Help section of the Uber app.

"Defendant's conduct is made more egregious by the fact that Uber paid the hackers to delete the personal information and keep quiet about the breach", Ferguson wrote in the lawsuit, filed in King County Superior Court.

"We are monitoring the affected accounts and have flagged them for additional fraud protection", the company said.
