An Oscar Contender's Reviews Are So Good, They Broke A Record

Saoirse Ronan's Lady Bird tops Rotten Tomatoes rating

Lady Bird dethroned 1999's Toy Story 2 from the top spot on the basis of the number of reviews counted. In other words, it is still possible that a rogue reviewer could tarnish Lady Bird's flawless score, though the huge number of positive reviews the film has already compiled would still easily make it one of 2017's best-reviewed movies.

Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

As of Tuesday morning, the film written by Gerwig and starring Saoirse Ronan found itself at 170 fresh reviews and counting, with an overall rating of 8.9 out of 10 from critics and no "rotten" reviews.

It's also worth noting that Rotten Tomatoes' scores for classic films such as 1972's The Godfather (99% with 84 "Fresh" reviews) and 1941's Citizen Kane (100% on just 75 reviews) are culled from far fewer critics' reviews than newer films. The movie now boasts a rare 100% score with 173 reviews and counting on an average rating of 8.9/10.

Greta Gerwig says Lady Bird's warm reception is"a dream come true

The film is Greta Gerwig's directorial debut, which makes the Rotten Tomatoes' feat all the more impressive. That there has been such a warm reception is a dream come true.

Only two other films in the websites history have managed to achieve a 100 per cent positive score with over 100 reviews - 2008 documentary Man on Wire, and Isabelle Hupperts drama Things to Come a year ago. "We are all on cloud nine and using our tomato emoji more than we ever thought possible".

"It's wonderful", she told Vanity Fair at the Gotham Awards red carpet on Monday night.

Lady Bird is now playing in select theaters.
