During the incident, sections of Oxford Street were cordoned off and Black Friday shoppers were urged to take cover in shops.
A woman who sustained minor injuries as people rushed out of the busy Underground station is believed to be the only person hurt in the incident.
"The station is now closed, please avoid the area at this time", they said.
Police in London have said that an altercation between two men on a central London Tube platform may have sparked mass panic and a terror alert that led to a section of the city being placed on lockdown.
Eyewitnesses reported being caught in "stampedes" and said there was "pandemonium" as police treated the incident as if it was terrorist-related.

As in any major incident these days, social media was awash with confused reports from Oxford Circus tonight, many of which turned out to be inaccurate.
Shoppers were barricaded inside stores on Oxford Street and armed police were deployed after the alarm was raised during the evening rush hour.
As Oxford Circus returned to normal late Friday, Jace Tyrrell, chief executive officer at the New West End Company, said: "This is a very high footfall area and safety and security are number-one priorities for everyone working in the district.
