Major Butch Frost of the Salvation Army says, "The Salvation Army does not like anyone to be alone on a holiday".

With a Packers beanie on and a bell in hand, the Congressman spent the afternoon at Pick 'n Save on Lombardi Access Road.

"Rather than compete with the numerous churches and non profit organizations serving meals on Thanksgiving day, we made a decision to provide meals the day before and the day after Thanksgiving to better support those in need of meals during the holidays", Kenady said. For people hit hard by life, they say they appreciate having a place to go to celebrate.

More than 300 people were expected to be served.

People can also sign up online by going to http://virginiasalvationarmy.org/danvillevacorp/ and clicking on "Adopt an Angel", Jackson said. She's already getting a good response; the agency is farther along for volunteer bell ringing signups than this time a year ago.

"I'm doing a good deed for the Salvation Army". A second meal, with just sandwiches, will be served from 5-6 p.m. Friday at the fellowship hall. "We've had a wonderful partnership with [Belk] for a long time and have been able to raise able to numerous funds over the years at the Belk store".

The annual Thanksgiving lunch is at the Salvation Army location on Beasley Road in Jackson.

Sullivan said the most vital part of the campaign is the volunteers.

"Thanksgiving is just the beginning of our work in the community", he said.

"Unfortunately we have to send people away because we don't have the beds available to fill the need of our men in the community". All they had to do was sit down, and their food, drink, and dessert were served to them, thanks to volunteers.

"I want to give back to help other people who are less fortunate", Michelle Lauria said.
