Amazon Set To Begin Operations In Australia

HEADS UP Amazon Australia Is Officially Opening Its Virtual Doors Tomorrow

How long the closed test phase will last for we don't know - One might take the regular "updates via email" to mean a launch is imminent and to expect regular nearly hourly emails for a Black Friday launch or one could equally guess that the emails will be spread over a number of days and there won't be a launch this week.

Australian third party merchants pay $49.95 plus GST monthly to sell on Amazon, plus 6% to 15% commission on products to the world's largest internet company by revenue.

The soft launch means not everyone will be able to see or buy products when they visit Amazon.com.au but marketplaces sellers will begin receiving orders and fulfilling them through their existing distribution network.

Pundits have projected online spending in Australia will grow at an annualised 13.5 per cent over the five years to 2017-18, to reach $20.1 billion in the wake of Amazon's arrival in the market.

A Thursday trial and Friday launch would coincide with Black Friday, an annual post-Thanksgiving online sales event in the US.

The analyst, who asked not to be named, said Amazon has been doing testing with a small number of people over recent weeks and the email simply indicates the retailer is advancing testing. Therefore, Amazon Prime might also not be launched on Friday.

"We are very close to launching with our retail and marketplace offer", Braeuniger said.

The Amazon Australia site is still just books and movies for now, but online shoppers will no doubt be furiously hitting refresh over the weekend.

'This is likely to include a broad range of categories, including toys, electronics, apparel and outdoor'.

Mr Kilmartin predicts Amazon will roll out more warehouses in Sydney and Brisbane initially.

'Amazon is definitely going to make a dent with the novelty and the buzz factor in the lead-up to Christmas, ' Mr Kilmartin said.
