Roger Federer keen for Australian Open after shocking ATP defeat

ATP FINALS- Goffin to meet Dimitrov for an unprecedented season decider

Goffin beat both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, the world's top two, during his run to the final, one ended by Grigor Dimitrov in a tight three-set final on Sunday.

Victory for the Bulgarian, who is the first man in 19 years to win the tournament at the first attempt, is enough to take him up to third place in the men's singles rankings.

Goffin, who became just the sixth player in history to beat Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the same tournament, forced his opponent back in the opening game and broke in stunning fashion with a scintillating forehand victor.

The second game of the second set was to prove a turning point as Goffin, beaten 6-2 6-1 by Federer in Basel last month, broke the Swiss's serve with a forehand victor and then consolidated his lead to take the match into a decider.

He'd had to change things up after taking only two games off Dimitrov in their round-robin encounter last Wednesday, but his courageous all-or-nothing approach wasn't enough as a late resurgence on his own serve and his encouragement for the crowd failed to save the match. "I was a bit nervous at the beginning, but I did some great serves, I was really aggressive so yeah, that was my day".

Goffin grabbed his chance in the next game with a forehand victor and confidently served out the set to force the game into a decider.

After an hour-long opening set, the two players matched each other in the second until the Belgian broke for 4-3 having survived a break point in the previous game.

Both Dimitrov and Goffin will now feature in the final match of the ATP Tour calendar in London for the first time in their careers.

Sock saved a break point before holding with an ace down the T to get to 3-1 and then broke back when Dimitrov netted a rally ball.

Dimitrov, who had a 100 per cent record in the group matches, asserted himself at the business end of the set and piled on the pressure when Goffin served at 5-6.

In his opening match, Dimitrov needed three sets to advance past fourth seed Dominic Thiem of Austria, but against Busta and fellow semifinalist David Goffin of Belgium, Dimitrov lost only four games in four sets.

It was too close to call but two Sock double faults helped Dimitrov break for 5-3.

The Bulgarian came through the tournament unbeaten and will end the year ranked third in the world, with his defeated opponent up to seventh. A gruelling contest, but Dimitrov eventually crunched a final deciding set 6-3 victory. Dimitrov has looked one of the freshest players at these finals and that, combined with his all-round game may have been the key to his success.
