Manhattan fire: Firefighters battle blaze in six-storey Harlem apartment building

Firefighters battle a large fire on the top floors of an apartment building in New York City's Harlem neighbourhood

It is not yet known how many people have been displaced by the fire, and the initial cause of the inferno has not been reported. "A lot of the tenants have been here for over 20 years, so to see everything go up in flames is heartbreaking".

More than 100 firefighters have battled a raging fire that burned through an apartment building in upper Manhattan.

Authorities urged pedestrians to stay away from the area after pieces of the building began falling onto the street after the roof collapsed. "We were afraid, we still are, we were afraid of the building collapsing", Leonard said. The wind fueled the fire and spread it quickly, a fire official said.

The fire broke out about 3:00pm on Friday (local time) in a six-storey building in Harlem, according to the New York Post.

"It couldn't have been in a worse position for the wind", Leonard said.

The Red Cross is providing help to families that have been affected.

"I tried to get as many people out as I could, I started banging on doors and just screaming 'fire fire, '" Carter said, according to WPIX.

"The building is old".

"I couldn't believe it", she said.

The fire ripped through the building, sending large plumes of smoke into the sky. By 4 p.m., the smoke had transitioned from black to a light gray as ladder trucks laid gallons of water on the flames.
