Dozens of local families get bigger during National Adoption Day

48 children were adopted in Ramsey County on National Adoption Day

The national Adoption Day event Friday saw nine children become part of forever families, thanks to the help of The Smith County Young Lawyers Association and Judge Carole Clark's 321st District Court. After more than six weeks, when the woman hadn't come back for her kids, White said she called the state and learned she would need to be a foster parent to truly be an advocate for children in need.

"There are a lot of special needs children, I encourage anyone to foster", she said.

Across Oklahoma, there are thousands of children in the care of Child Protective Services (CPS) waiting for adoption. Under HB 3859, for example, an adoption agency could keep kids in a government group home rather than allowing them to be adopted by loving parents who don't pass an agency's religious test, or could refuse to allow an orphaned child to be adopted by an extended family member like a gay uncle or a transgender grandparent.

"This is my very first adoption, I've had Prynce on my caseload for about a year", Chelsea Loughin said. "And being with them and showing them love teaches them how to show love when they grow up".

Statewide there are about 1,700 children who are eligible for adoption, and Superior Court Judge Marilyn Haan said the number of children in foster care is on the rise. "I mean, you can't help but love her, whenever you see and you spend time with her, you just fall in love with her". You can't put a price on that. If you're unsure what difference being adopted makes in a child's life, consider the words of one famous adoptee."I was adopted at 7 months, and I'm going to tell you what that means", comedian, singer, actor and Academy Award victor Jamie Foxx said in September on the Fox game show "Beat Shazam".

They are about to learn they will never be separated after the hardships they have been through. "I always treat them like my own", she said. I'm privileged to know each one of you professionally and personally.

"You get so invested, so involved, that it naturally comes", Christopher Youngman said. "We always talked about having some and adopting some whenever we were dating and after we got married, we weren't able to have kids so then we've just got into foster care and adopted through foster care".

Smith shared with the crowd the motto of the adoption-supportive Dave Thomas Foundation: "Unadoptable is Unacceptable".
