Elderly Man Accidentally Shoots Himself & Wife While Discussing Guns In Church

Discussion on church shootings at Tennessee church leads to 2 accidentally shot

"I carry my handgun everywhere", the man, who has yet to be named, said, according to Parks.

As they talked about the November 5 massacre in Sutherland Springs, Texas, someone reportedly asked if anyone in the group brings a gun to church.

The 81-year old man took out a Ruger.38 hangun cleared it and showed it to other parishioners during an early Thanksgiving dinner on November 9 at First United Methodist Church in Tellico Plains.

Tellico Plains Police Chief Russ Parks told Knox News that the man, who is in his 80s, pulled out the gun, removed the magazine, and cleared the chamber to show the gun to his fellow church members, but placed the magazine back in when he re-holstered the weapon and laid it on a table. He then reloaded the gun before putting it back in his holster. He then chose to pull the trigger.

Members of the First United Methodist Church in Tellico Plains were cleaning up after a luncheon when they began talking about guns in church, police said, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel. The bullet then hit his wife in the lower left side, went out the right side of her stomach, and through her right forearm.

Both suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said. He said no charges were pending. Since America is a country with almost one gun for every citizen, it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that someone would be shot at their church while attending a meeting about church shootings.

Charges will not be filed in the matter, Parks told local news.

Since the accidental shooting occurred during a weekday afternoon, a nearby school was put on lockdown over fears of an active shooter situation.
