Apple is pushing HomePod's release to 2018. Well, if you've been waiting for the company to release it, you're going to have to wait a bit more now.

In a statement released on Friday, Apple didn't offer specific reasons for the delay, simply claiming it "needed a little more time" to ideal it.

The Cupertino, Calif. -based tech company said in a statement it simply needs "a little more time before it's ready for our customers", but failed to get into any specifics about the production delay, CNBC said. "We'll start shipping in the U.S., United Kingdom and Australia in early 2018", an Apple spokeswoman said via email.

Apple's offering promises higher-end sound than the Google Home and Amazon Echo produces, albeit at a much larger $349 price tag.

If you were hoping to buy a HomePod for your honey this holiday season, you'll have to come up with plan b. It stands 7 inches tall and features six microphones, which will listen for your command to Siri.

People use voice assistants more often on smart speakers than on phones, so even if owners of Amazon or Google speakers also have an iPhone, there's a good chance that they're talking to Alexa or Google Assistant as much or more than Siri.

Apple has delayed the launch of HomePod, its upcoming smart home speaker, to "early 2018". If HomePod isn't shipping by March we may be waiting until late June before it shows up on store shelves.

This time around, Apple will miss out on the bounty of festive sales, potentially ceding them to Amazon, Google, Sonos and other manufacturers of smart speakers.
