Security forces step up winter offensive against militants in Kashmir

An Indian Army soldier and a Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist were killed in an encounter in Qazigund area of south Kashmir's Kulgam district on Tuesday.

According to IANS, as soon as the security forces cordoned off Nowbug village in Qazigund area following information about the presence of the militants, they were fired at, triggering the fighting.

"The militants fired upon a joint party of police, army and paramilitary troopers who were deployed at a crossing to check the movement of vehicles".

A militant was also killed in the operation, the sources said. A policeman associated with the Special Operations Group (SOG) suffered injuries, police said.
