Competition coming for Uber as Lyft expands to Toronto

Lyft Uber's rideshare rival has chosen Toronto for its first market outside the U.S. Future driver Khalid Ahmed will drive for Lyft when they set up shop here next month in Toronto

After operating exclusively in the US for the first five years of its existence, Lyft Inc. looks to launch an global expansion. "We've had incredible interest from both drivers and passengers in Toronto".

Lyft will likely have a good chance of becoming a strong competitor relatively quickly - Lyft co-founder John Zimmer points out to the Toronto Star that 50,000 Torontonians have the Lyft app on their phone already, despite there being no service available in the country.

This is a significant expansion not just for Canadians and residents of Toronto, however; Lyft moving into a market outside the USA signals it might now be ready for more ambitious worldwide growth.

In an effort to entice drivers, Lyft is offering a 25 percent bonus for the first 3,000 drivers who are approved and who complete 20 rides a week during the company's first three months of operation in Toronto.

In its first global launch, Lyft is heading north of the border.

"There is some pretty high, positive sentiment with Lyft", he added.

Uber arrived in Canada several years ago and has fought an uphill regulatory battle ever since, leaving it banned or pushed out of some Canadian cities as the taxi cab industry dug in its heels against new competition from unlicensed platforms.

The ride-hailing service says it's recruiting drivers starting Monday in Canada's largest city and expects to begin service sometime in December.

Uber also has been embroiled in a fight in Quebec over the province's rules for ride-hailing services. But Lyft won't say which city is next.
