Three-Carrier Strike Force Exercise to Commence in Western Pacific

The largest US warship in Asia, the USS Ronald Reagan, will join the USS Nimitz and the USS Theodore Roosevelt in the naval exercise on November 11-14.

The units that have been assigned the strike force will conduct coordinated operations in worldwide waters to demonstrate the United States Navy's unique potential to operate multiple carrier strike groups as a coordinated strike force effort, according to the official website of the Commander, U.S. 7 Fleet.

The last time a three-carrier group took part in exercises like this was in 2006 and 2007 during drills off the coast of Guam.

The exercise will involve three of the Navy's 11 carriers, and concentrate more aircraft carriers the combined fleets of China and Russian Federation.

DONALD Trump has ordered the "three largest aircraft carriers in the world" to Kim Jong-un's doorstep in the biggest Western Pacific strike force drill for a decade.

He added, "Multiple carrier strike force operations are very complex, and this exercise in the Western Pacific is a strong testament to the U.S. Pacific Fleet's unique ability and ironclad commitment to the continued security and stability of the region". Trump sought to ratchet up pressure on North Korea by refusing to rule out eventual military action and declaring that the United States "will not stand" for North Korea menacing America or its Asian allies.

A defense source said the three carriers will convene at sea relatively close to the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea, which sees any military drills near its country as a rehearsal for invasion, has not responded to the news of the drills yet, nor has it reacted to any of Trump's remarks during his time in Japan, South Korea and China.

The statement did not rule out North Korea, who previously threatened to fire ballistic missiles off Guam, an American island in the Western Pacific, which hosts strategic US military bases.

He said of the North Korean threats to strike the US and its allies, "That would be a fatal miscalculation".

Defense hawks in Congress have long sought more missile defense funding as North Korea advances it nuclear and missile capabilities.

The CIA has said North Korea could be only months away from developing the ability to hit the United States with nuclear weapons, a scenario Trump has vowed to prevent. This is a very different administration than the USA has had in the past.
