Send Nudes: Facebook Wants Naked Pictures of Users to Fight Revenge Porn

Australian users are being encouraged to alert the eSafety Commissioner about the image they're concerned about by completing a form on her website, and send it to themselves on Messenger. This strategy would help Facebook to create a digital fingerprint for the picture and mark it as non-consensual explicit media.

The Australian government agency e-Safety is partnering with Facebook in an effort to prevent people from sharing intimate images without consent, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Facebook says that it recognizes that revenge porn can be an "incredibly devastating experience" for victims.

But can you trust Facebook?

In April, Facebook introduced an anti-revenge porn feature to their platform, creating a system to detect and block known illegal images.

Others, however, have expressed serious concerns about the amount of trust the system requires users to put in Facebook.

The move follows on from Facebook's update earlier in the year which allowed users to report images that they thought were revenge porn.

Facebook told ABC News in Australia the social networking giant would "hash" images, marking them digitally in such a way that any attempted to upload them in future would be blocked.

According to the Office of the e-safety commissioner, one in five Australians aged between 16 and 49 is a victim of IBA.

You want Facebook to remove your racy photos that your disgruntled ex shared on the social media?

Facebook has begun conducting a pilot where it solicits intimate photographs of women - and it will soon offer the service in the United Kingdom.

However, the trial won't completely solve Australia's revenge porn woes, Clare McGlynn, an expert from Durham Law School, told BBC. For protection against "revenge porn", the Telegraph reported. Should someone attempt to upload that same nude image, with the same digital footprint, Facebook's technology would prevent that from happening.

After that, it would be up to the company's AI tech to prevent anyone from uploading porn depicting the same person.

Facebook and other technology companies use this type of photo-matching technology where images are "hashed" to tackle other types of content including child sex abuse and extremist imagery.
