Niantic is reportedly building an augmented reality Harry Potter game

Report Pokemon GO Creator Working On Harry Potter Wizards Unite

Like their previous games, Ingress and Pokemon GO, the newly-announced Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will use AR to pair gaming with the real world.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is releasing the game under their new label for Harry Potter mobile and console games known as Portkey Games, according to the official Harry Potter website Pottermore. The game, made in conjunction with Warner Bros.

This new title is just the beginning though, because they've also launched a brand video games division, Portkey Games. Ingress is more centered on location defense and exploration than capturing Pokemon, so this would make sense for an epic fantasy franchise that pits good against evil.

Rumors about Niantic developing a Harry Potter game actually surfaced previous year, though the developer quickly squashed those rumors.

It's the first game from a new studio dedicated to creating games in the "Harry Potter" universe. Hopefully the content updates are handled better than with Niantic's original project, Pokemon Go! Explore real-world neighbourhoods and cities to discover mysterious artifacts, learn to cast spells, and encounter legendary beasts and iconic characters along the way!

The Harry Potter franchise is nearly certainly more recognizable on a global scale.

Pokémon Go got its mechanics from the show that inspired it and the console games that came before it, but the Harry Potter books and films don't provide the same simple blueprint.

That's all the detail we have at the moment, but we will keep you posted when further information is available. Similar to Pokemon Go, it allows players to roam the real world collecting power-ups, defending locations, and exploring their environment.
