Here's why Rahul Gandhi called demonetisation 'tragedy' and 'PM's thoughtless act'

Rahul Gandhi promises to overhaul Goods and Services Tax if Congress is voted to power in 2019

One year on, the man says he supports the government's move and that it benefitted the economy.

Terming demonetisation a "tragedy", Gandhi, whose party is today observing "black day" on the anniversary of the decision, tweeted a last year's photograph of Nand Lal in which the septuagenarian former army soldier appeared anguished as he stood in a queue to withdraw currency after the note ban.

"It is deplorable how Rahul Gandhi believes in manufacturing tragedies, so much so that he is also using the poor of India to score cheap political points", he said.

The top leaders of the Congress and the BJP battled it out on social media platform Twitter on the first anniversary of demonetisation with Gandhi firing the first shot. "But instead of helping them grow, the Modi government has fatally wounded them with demonetisation and a flawed new tax", Gandhi added.

Rahul's remarks came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the Congress accepted defeat in Himachal Pradesh and will not return to power here in near future. The Congress has become "incorrect news Congress" and the "biggest source of false news", the BJP chief said. Suggesting that India is in a crucial phase of growth, which needs to be supported by large-scale job creation, Mr Gandhi stated "official figures" which suggest that "China now creates on average 50,000 jobs every single day; India under Mr Modi manages only 500".

According to him, GST was a "a hastily imposed and poorly conceptualised" tax that dealt another blow to the economy.

"It says in the Gita, "Do your work, don't worry about the fruits of your labour", but Modiji's interpretation is "eat up the fruits of others" labour, don't worry about doing any work'", Rahul said while addressing an election rally in poll-bound Himachal Pradesh. We urgently need to empower these networks and connect them to capital and technology.

An old man captured on camera with tears trickling down his cheeks as he stood outside a State Bank of India branch in Gurgaon to withdraw money as a crowd watched had become the face of the pain many felt in the aftermath of the drastic decision announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8 previous year.
