Danica Roem, Virginia's 1st transgender elected official, promises culture change in Richmond

"It's something that even if you are cisgender, but you have some reason that you've been singled out in your life, you have some reason that you've been stigmatized in your life, you've had some reason when you've been cornered in your life for being yourself, you can look at me and say, 'If she can do this, so can I'".

With her victory, the former journalist and current frontwoman for a "drunken thrash metal" band called Cab Ride Home, Roem beat a man who has been elected 13 times across a 26-year span. Marshall's quarter-century in office culminated in him being called "Virginia's Chief Homophobe" and now we know why-on the campaign trail, he consistently used incorrect pronouns for Roem and refused to be in the same room as her. Bye bye, bigot! "Our great Commonwealth has had many significant electoral firsts, and it's no surprise the diverse and welcoming citizens of Prince William County have chosen to elect the first transgender candidate to any state's legislative body". Marshall also penned Virginia's so-called bathroom bill, which would have made it unlawful for trans folk to use whichever bathroom they wanted to use. When a reporter asked her about Marshall, Roem's reply was: "I don't attack my constituents".

Once Ms Roem is sworn in January, she will also be the first openly transgender person elected and seated in a state legislature in the U.S., according to the Victory Fund, a political action committee that works to get openly LGBTQ people elected, and has supported Ms Roem.

Roem, who couldn't immediately be reached for an interview Tuesday night, openly discussed her gender identity during her campaign, but it was far from her focus.

Roem had been running against Delegate Bob Marshall who held the office for 25 years. She won more than 70% of the votes, the newspaper reported.

"Ninety-two years later, Seattle is about to have a new woman mayor", she told The Seattle Times after her win. "I'm committed to continue the fight for you, but in a different role going forward". Tyler Titus, who is openly transgender, won a seat on a western Pennsylvania school board.

Vi Lyles became the first black woman to be elected mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina. Kathy Tran, a refugee from Vietnam, became the first Asian American woman elected to the Virgina House of Delegates.
