Apple's next iPad could have Face ID and no home button

Redesigned

According to people familiar with the matter, the redesigned iPad is expected to ditch the home button, replacing touch ID with Face ID, and feature slimmer bezels similar to the iPhone X. An OLED display is however said to be unlikely.

However, the new version of the tablet is unlikely to include an OLED screen, which provides more vivid colors and sharper clarity, the people said.

Dropping the home button on the iPad would allow for a larger screen in the same physical footprint.

Apple is allegedly working on a few different models, with at least one new model of this high-end new iPad having a screen roughly the size of the current 10.5-inch iPad Pro.

It looks like the iPad could be the next Apple product to get the Face ID treatment.

Tablet sales have taken a 17 percent decline globally over the last three years and Apple certainly felt it.

The iPad itself is enjoying a bit of a renaissance this year, thanks largely to the launch of the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and the new, affordable 9.7-inch iPad.

Apple reported during its earnings call last week that iPad revenue rose 14% to $4.8 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter, with an 11% increase in the number of units sold. The sources say it is because of a combination of financial and technical constraints, namely because Apple would need Samsung Electronics to supply these panels. Face ID was introduced on the iPhone X which began shipping earlier this month. Apple's facial recognition feature is used like Touch ID to unlock a user's device and for approving payments using Apple Pay.

The new 2018 iPad model is also expected to have an improved Apple Pencil stylus and better software for taking notes and drawing. The new TrueDepth camera will also bring iPhone X's blockbuster Animoji feature to the iPad, which allows users to make animated emojis using their facial expressions.
