Apple planning AR headset for 2020

Apple is building augmented reality glasses that overlay the digital world on top of the real world Report

And now it looks like the company might be looking to officially release its headset in 2020.

Apple are developing a device for augmented reality.

In its newest iOS mobile operating system iteration, Apple introduced ARKit, an augmented reality platform that allows apps to overlay three-dimensional graphics on top of real-world viewing through the iPhone and iPad.

Bloomberg said an Apple team is building the headset and a special chip for it. Many had thought the iPhone X would have more augmented reality capability, but its key 3D sensing kit is on the front of the device to detect faces for unlocking and animation.

"There are rumors and gossip about companies working on that, and we obviously don't talk about what we work on".

"We're already seeing things that will transform the way you work, play, connect and learn", Cook said on a November 3 conference call with analysts. The headset they're working on will run its own operating system, named rOS for "reality operating system", and will include its own built-in display instead of relying on the user's smartphone. This will be a device for internal development only.

The OS, tentatively dubbed "rOS" ("reality operating system") internally, would be yet another iteration of iOS, similar to tvOS and watchOS, Bloomberg reports. They're also using a device like the Oculus Gear VR headset that uses an iPhone's screen, cameras, and chipsets. Apple's use of full-faced devices such as the HTC Vive suggests that instead of trying to tackle the hard and expensive problem of lightfield technology Apple may simply be going for a simpler passthrough system where the only challenge would be to improve latency to an acceptable level.

Apple boss Tim Cook has previously said that he favours AR over VR, mainly because it is "less isolating".

"Head-mounted displays will serve as a two-way stepping stone for the next stage of human-computer interactions alongside multi-modal interactions such as touch, gesture, movement, voice-all with AI enabled components (think Siri, Cortana, Google Assistant, Alexa)", Gartner analyst Tuong H. Nguyen told TechRepublic. For now, Apple hasn't finalized how users will control the handset and launch apps.
