Welcome to a world with 280-character tweets

Twitter earlier expanded their tweet character limit from the archaic, SMS inspired 140 characters to a more flexible 280 characters, doubling the character count so u wnt hv to typ lyk dis anymore. But now, most people use Twitter through its mobile app; the 140-character limit is no longer a technical constraint but nostalgia.

One of the USPs of the service was the brevity that it enforced on users.

We - and many of you - were concerned that timelines may fill up with 280 character Tweets, and people with the new limit would always use up the whole space. Now every Twitter user - from first-day users to President Donald Trump - will have twice the room to share their thoughts.

Interestingly, Twitter said that after the novelty of tweeting more characters wore off, most people in the test stopped tweeting the full length. Under the old 140-character format, users were hitting the limit around 9% of the time. Most tweets still hover around 50 characters.

Starting from this evening, the character limit will be incresed to 280 characters.

Twitter says this often results in lots of time spent editing and, at times, abandoning tweets before sending. "But importantly, people tweeted below 140 most of the time and the brevity of Twitter remained".

Everyone, that is, except those tweeting in Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages. Twitter did not provide information on whether it had seen an increase in harassment on its site, due to the higher character limit.

Though neither user has offered any details on the exact method they used to send out this monster tweet, some have speculated that the use of certain URL suffixes (such as.cc) is what allowed for the exploit.

The character change could also help spur user growth, an important issue for investors wanting Twitter to follow the trajectory of social media giants such as Facebook and Instagram.

It's worth emphasizing again that people in the test got very excited about the extra space in the beginning and many Tweets went way beyond 140.

But even the most ardent 280-character-tweet defenders will likely agree that the ability to send out a 35,000-character tweet might be pushing the envelope just a bit.
