Carter Page testifies he told Sessions about Russian Federation trip

Ivanka Trump left adviser to and daughter of U.S. President Donald Trump and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attend a meeting of the World Assembly for Women in Tokyo Friday Nov. 3 2017

During more than six hours of closed-door testimony, Page said that he informed Sessions about his coming July 2016 trip to Russian Federation, which Page told CNN was unconnected to his campaign role.

Feinstein, the Senate Judiciary Committee's top Democrat, said on CNN's "State of the Union" that she would discuss bringing Sessions before her panel with the committee's Republican chairman, Iowa Sen.

"During many public appearances prior to his November 2, 2017 testimony before the House Intelligence Committee in open session, Carter Page characterized his July 2016 trip to Russia as a private one in which his interactions with Russian individuals were largely confined to the 'man on the street, '" Schiff said.

Asked about the email, Page told lawmakers he did not mean that he had met with officials, but rather had learned of their views in local media, from scholars in Russian Federation and at a public speech given by Dvorkovich at a conference where Page was also speaking.Page said he had a "brief hello" with Dvorkovich. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., then a key Trump supporter and now attorney general, and said he "probably" had told national campaign co-chairman Sam Clovis before leaving and definitely did so on his return. Sessions has denied he was aware of anyone in the campaign communicating or dealing with Russians who were interfering with the election.

Schiff called the Russian links to Papadopoulos and Page two parallel efforts by the Trump campaign to make contacts with Russian interests.

In his July 2016 note, Page wrote that Dvorkovich had "expressed strong support for Mr. Trump and a desire to work together toward devising better solutions in response to a vast range of current worldwide problems".

Page admitted he met with Russian officials and discussed the USA election "in general terms".

"I'm telling you that he was a volunteer member of an advisory council that literally met one time", Sanders said during a press briefing on October 30.

"He didn't say yes and he didn't say no", the official said, declining to be more specific about Trump's response to Papadopoulos.

Tapper was asking Feinstein about revelations this week that former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that he was in talks with a London-based professor with Kremlin connections who claimed in April 2016 to have learned that the Russian government had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands" of her emails.

Page also acknowledged that he solicited suggestions for his Moscow speech from the campaign.

Reuters reported on Monday that the committee would hold a hearing with Sessions next week.

Page's July 2016 trip to Moscow drew attention during the campaign, particularly after WikiLeaks released emails that had been hacked from the Democratic National Committee a few weeks later and Russian Federation became a controversial campaign topic.

Only 7 percent of Trump voters say they believe that members of the campaign team colluded with Russian Federation.
