Koenigsegg Agera RS sets highest speed world record for production vehicle

The Koenigsegg Agera RS Is Now the Fastest Production Car Ever Made

The small Swedish automaker's Agera RS supercar has claimed the title of World's Fastest Production Car at 277.9 miles per hour. Towards the end of the second run, the Agera RS even surpasses 450 km/h - close to the speed of a small aircraft.

The Swedish automobile manufacturer's efforts were not in vain though, as the Koenigsegg Agera RS successfully broke the record that was previously held by Bugatti. The Koenigsegg Agera RS set the new world record with the data for the record verified by Racelogic. The average speed achieved, measuring runs in both directions, was 447.0 km/h (277.9 mph).

This very same vehicle was stretched to its Earth-scorching limits by factory test driver Niklas Lilja on Saturday, along an 11-mile (17.7 km) piece of public highway near Las Vegas on Saturday that had been shut down by Nevada authorities for the attempt. This may make the Agera RS the world's fastest street legal production auto. The tires that were used are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, and Michelin reps were on hand to be sure everything was good with the tires. As the name of the record suggests, the Koenigsegg is now the world's fastest production auto - which means it hasn't been tweaked or upgraded in any way.

On its first run, the £1.5 million Agera RS hit 271.1mph, hitting 284.7mph on its second run.

Unveiled at SEMA earlier this week, the Hennessey Venom F5 was teased with a 300mph road-sign.

Koenigsegg managed to get part of Highway 160 closed for up to two days - but the brief nature of the record meant that a few hours was more than enough time.
