Trump advisor, linked to Russian Federation probe, withdraws candidacy for post

Carter Page a former foreign policy adviser to Donald Trump speaks with reporters on Nov. 2 2017

Sessions repeated that claim in written testimony to the committee, despite multiple meetings with the Russian envoy Sergey Kislyak during the campaign.

"Sen. Franken, I'm not aware of any of those activities".

In a written questionnaire to the Senate Judiciary Committee during his confirmation, Sessions also told the panel he was not in contact with anyone associated with the Russian government - despite the fact that Sessions met twice with Sergey Kislyak, then the Russian ambassador to the US, during the campaign.

In numerous media interviews in recent months, the adviser, Carter Page, has either denied meeting Russian government officials during a July 2016 trip to Moscow or said he met "mostly scholars", the newspaper said. "I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians", Sessions replied.

In court papers, the unnamed supervisor receives some of Papadopoulos' email exchanges about his attempts to line up a meeting with the Russians, appearing to encourage the effort at one point by responding "Great work". "I am deeply troubled that this newest revelation strongly suggests that the Senate-and the American public-cannot trust your word".

In his traditional Friday appearance on Shepard Smith Reporting, Wallace noted that a new Attorney General might be inclined to get involved in the Russian Federation probe, which Sessions has recused himself from.

A lawyer representing Clovis confirmed this week that Clovis was the person, identified as the "Campaign Supervisor" in court papers, who brought Papadopoulos onto an advisory committee on national security.

The revelation that Carter Page - a former campaign advisor to President Donald Trump - testified that he gave Attorney General Jeff Sessions a heads-up before taking a trip to Russian Federation in 2016 carries potentially grave implications for the nation's top cop.

"I don't make anything sinister out of it", Conaway told CNN. "I mentioned that I'm heading over there and totally unrelated to the campaign".

A source familiar with Sessions' comments to Congress told ABC News the attorney general "has been entirely truthful and consistent on this matter".

Both Senate Republicans and Democrats pressed the attorney general on the Comey firing and the investigation into Russian interference in the election; Catherine Herridge goes in-depth for 'Special Report'.

At the time of that article, a spokeswoman for Sessions declined to comment.

"The attorney general needs to explain to our committee what are the obvious implications of his presence at that meeting, and how he can square that with his testimony to our committee", said Sen.
