StarCraft II Going Free-To-Play Starting November 14

Starcraft 2 will go free-to-play later this month

What it means in this case is that the original release of StarCraft II, which included the Wings of Liberty campaign, is being given away entirely for free. But in a seeming effort to combat account abuse, players will first have to achieve 10 game-of-the-day victories in either the unranked ladder or against the game's AI, before they can access the multiplayer ladder. "It was very important to us that this be accomplished in a way that feels good to our current player base and also attractive to new players or lapsed players who haven't played since Wings of Liberty". We'll be bringing you more exciting news coming out of BlizzCon this weekend, so check back with A9K soon. "Players will collect resources to assist an AI-controlled archangel mech against an imposing array of hybrid bosses".

Sporting a vibrant 3D-graphics engine, StarCraft II will once again center on the clash between the protoss, terrans, and zerg, with each side deploying legions of veteran, upgraded, and new unit types. The changes also "promote more player control" regarding the game's state, and reduce sudden "game-ending moments". However, there are some limitations to which parts of the real-time strategy game will be open to all gamers. But the studio hasn't abandoned StarCraft II yet. Online multiplayer and select commanders will also be free. The other single-player campaigns for StarCraft II, namely Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, and Nova Covert Ops, will be available for purchase with a price tag of $14.99.

During his annual address to the community at BlizzCon, Mike Morhaime, the president of Blizzard Entertainment, announced that large portions of the real-time strategy game would be made available free of charge.
