Bush Sr and Jr openly condemn Donald Trump

George W. Bush ‘I’m worried that I will be the last Republican president

Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush have never been close to or openly amicable with President Donald Trump.

But Trump, who has made more than 1,300 false or misleading claims in less than a year and nearly constantly insults his many rivals, did win the presidency.

"I don't like him", Bush, 93, says in the book, according to a review by The New York Times.

This is the first time that both former presidents have spoken out publicly to disavow President Trump.

The book also has some surprisingly frank reactions by George W. Bush to certain claims, including that his vice president, Dick Cheney, and defense secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, were the real power brokers in his administration.

In light of Trump's anti-trade, anti-immigration agenda that runs counter to decades of GOP dogma, George W. Bush feared he would be seen as the "last Republican president", a quote that gave the book its title.

Upon learning this, Updegrove wrote, George W. Bush thought to himself: "Wow, this guy really doesn't understand the job of president".

But "this is all different with Donald Trump", said presidential historian Douglas Brinkley.

"I voted "None of the Above" for president, and Republican down ballot in 2016", he said of choosing not to support Trump.

These statements were reportedly made before the election.

George HW Bush said he voted for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, while his son told Mr Updegrove he did not vote for anyone.

"Inside the Extraordinary Relationship Between George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush", H.W. Bush told the author Mark Updegrove in 2016 that he doesn't like Trump.

Trump had recently had nice things to say about another former president, Jimmy Carter, whom he once called worst president in U.S. history.
