A gunman shot dead at least 20 worshippers during Sunday morning services at a Baptist church in Texas, news media reported.

Wilson County Commissioner Albert Gamez Jr. told CNN that multiple people were killed and numerous people were injured in Sunday's shooting.

Agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were heading to Sutherland Springs, a town of about 400, those agencies said. According to the Handbook of Texas, the population was 362 in 2000.

The official said the gunman fled in a vehicle after the attack and was killed, either by a self-inflicted wound or during a confrontation with police. It was not immediately clear how the shooter was taken down. He added that he is "monitoring the situation from Japan".

A law enforcement expert told CNN that the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is on the scene, is likely involved to investigate the case as a possible hate crime since it occurred at a church.

More details are set to be released shortly.

Video on KSAT television showed first responders taking a stretcher from the church to a waiting AirLife helicopter.

Carrie Matula, who works at a nearby gas station near, told MSNBC she heard what sounded like semiautomatic gunfire coming from the modest, white clapboard church with a red door.

The FBI has arrived to secure the scene. Eight of the wounded were transported to Brooke Army Medical Center and and seven others to area hospitals.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tweeted: "Keeping all harmed in Sutherland Springs in our prayers and grateful for our courageous first responders on the scene".
