Scott McTominay backed to become a big star for Manchester United

Phil Neville Nemanja Matic Chelsea mistake sacking

Chelsea's decision to sell Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic to title rivals Manchester United raised more than a few eyebrows and the consequences may be felt when the sides clash in the Premier League on Sunday.

Mourinho's capture of Matic is looking shrewder every week, prompting former United defender Phil Neville to say after Chelsea's 3-0 Champions League drubbing at AS Roma this week that selling the Serb was the main reason why Chelsea are struggling defensively.

Matic completed his £40m move to Manchester United in July and Chelsea were widely criticised for sanctioning the sale.

During a press conference at the Aon Training Complex to preview Sunday's Premier League match at Chelsea, Mourinho was asked if good results are not good enough for some people.

"Whether it is as big of a deal as everyone is trying to make out, I don't know".

"They've got to give him time". It's not important, I have respect for his job, he has respect for mine.

Chelsea slaughtered United at the bridge last season, and it led to bad blood between the two managers, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte. "(They are) totally different games, what happened last season, happened last season and now we have to think in the present", Mata said.

"So when he told me: "You can have him if you want", of course I wanted".

'If they continue in this way.I think this is the big problem for all the teams, if they continue in this way, it will be very hard to fight for the title but for sure, we have to try to do our best in every game and I think until now, we deserve to have these points'.

Chelsea were picked apart by Roma in the Champions League Group C fixture on Tuesday as head coach Antonio Conte cut a frustrated figure post-match.
