Government recalls almost 38M fire extinguishers manufactured in NC

There have been almost 400 reports of extinguishers malfunctioning, resulting in 16 injuries and one death. In a 2014 flaming auto crash, the company admits in the recall notice, "Emergency responders could not get the recalled Kidde fire extinguishers to work".

In 2014, emergency personnel responded to a auto fire following a crash and could not get their fire extinguishers to work, resulting in a death.

Kidde marketing videos emphasize how important their products are in the event of a fire, but the company is now recalling 37.8 million of its fire extinguishers in the United States, reports CBS News correspondent Kris Van Cleave.

A total of 134 models of Kidde fire extinguishers manufactured between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017.

Extinguishers have been sold at several stores including The Home Deport, Walmart and Amazon.

In addition, Kidde admits in the recall notice, "There have been approximately 391 reports of failed or limited activation or nozzle detachment, including the fatality, approximately 16 injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns, and approximately 91 reports of property damage".

Canada has experienced a record-breaking wildfire season this year, and now it seems even having a fire extinguisher handy may not be enough for residents living in wildfire-prone areas.

The push-button pindicator fire extinguishers were sold in red and white, and with a red or black nozzle, primarily for kitchen and personal watercraft applications. Please supply the model number, year of manufacture, the unit's date code and serial number. No injuries had resulted from those malfunctions at the time of the recalls.

Note: This recall includes fire extinguisher models that were previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015.

The CPSC is working in conjunction with Health Canada to notify customers of the recall.

Kidde will replace the fire extinguisher for free for one with metal parts.
