Putin holds talks with Iranian, Azerbaijani counterparts

Russia's Putin arrives in Iran

They repeated that there is a need for all sides to respect their obligations according to the multilateral agreement.

Putin met with his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rowhani, who had been expecting a statement of approval from the Russian leader on the 2015 deal that obliges Iran to cut back its nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of worldwide sanctions.

"During the exchange of views on pressing global and regional issues, special attention will be paid to coordination of joint efforts to combat terrorism and extremism, drug trafficking and transnational crime", the press service said. I would like to stress that we are working with Iran in a very productive way.

Pointing to some of the cooperation between two countries in the fields of culture, economy, investment, energy and transportation and his government's efforts to build mosques, Aliyev said, "we are strengthening our economic and cultural relation with Iran and we are determined these relations be stable and lasting".

"No one is paying attention to the Americans' rhetoric", Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Rahimpur said Tuesday.

President Donald Trump refused to recertify the deal in October and has threatened to withdraw the United States if what he calls serious flaws in the accord can not be fixed by USA lawmakers and us allies. The other parties to the accord - Britain, China, France, Germany and the European Union - also have all urged Trump to stay in the deal. The Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that the accord would collapse if Washington officially withdrew its support.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited the Iranian capital, Tehran, attending a trilateral summit with the leaders of Iran and Azerbaijan.

"During my stay in Tehran, I would like to discuss the current situation in Syria, as well as the areas for further military and technical cooperation between Iran and Russia", Gerasimov said. Our cooperation can isolate America. Putin also held a separate meeting with Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

During Putin's visit, Russian oil producer Rosneft and the National Iranian Oil Company agreed an outline deal to work on a number of "strategic" projects in Iran together worth up to $30 billion.

Pragmatist Iranian President Hassan Rouhani echoed Khamenei, saying Iran and Russian Federation together could tackle "regional terrorism" - an allusion to Sunni Muslim armed groups hostile to Iran, Assad and many other Arab states.

Aliyev opened a similar rail project on Monday that links the Azeri capital, Baku, to Turkey via Georgia, offering a transport corridor to move goods between China and Europe through central Asia, in competition with existing routes through Russian Federation and Iran. The next such summit is to be held in Russian Federation next year.
