Nintendo Switch sells 7.6 million units worldwide

200 Titles Now Available in Nintendo Switch eShop

That's more than the 1.5 million NES Classic units Nintendo sold by the end of 2016 and well on the way to that system's 2.3 million total sales by the time it was discontinued in April. The company forecast a profit of 120 billion yen for the year ending March, up from the 65 billion yen estimated three months ago. More importantly, it almost doubled its forecast for full-year profit to 125 billion yen ($1.1 billion).

That console was on the market for about five years but failed to live up to its predecessor the Wii, which sold 20 million in its first year and went on to shift more than 100 million units.

Analysts expect Nintendo to take advantage of the Switch's success to tap into the widespread popularity of mobile games.

Nintendo (NTDOY) shares shot up Monday after the video game heavyweight said it almost doubled its profit outlook and said it expects to sell millions more Switch consoles than previously thought.

Super Mario Odyssey for the Switch launched last week. "We want to make sure stores have our products in stock", Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said Monday.

Not only can the handheld console be brought outdoors, the removable controllers allow two people to play.

The size and importance of the Switch sales number from Nintendo can be well understood in light of the Wii U performance. The Wii U also didn't see the kind of software selections that the Switch has been seeing, which includes over 200 games just seven months after its release.

With the recent release of the incredible Super Mario Odyssey and the impending holidays to consider, it's likely that the Switch will meet the company's new sales forecast easily - of they can ramp up production, that is.

As The Verge reports, Nintendo is now revising its yearly sales forecast.
