Houston Texans Players Almost Walked Out of Practice Over Owner's 'Inmates' Remark

Houston Texans Introduce Bill O'Brien

McNair met with Texans players Saturday morning, after his comments referring to National Football League players as "inmates" became public, according to multiple reports.

At a meeting including other owners and commissioner Roger Goodell, McNair reportedly said "we can't have inmates running the prison", referring to players kneeling during the national anthem.

ESPN said McNair later apologized to Vincent. "They just kind of sent me to the wolves".

McNair, 79, has since gone on record to express his "regrets" about using "that expression", insisting it was a "figure of speech that was never meant to be taken literally". "I would never characterise our players or our league that way and I apologise to anyone who was offended by it".

"Respecting the flag" was important optically but so too was addressing players' concerns about social inequality, which was the reason Colin Kaepernick protested during the anthem for the first time in August 2016. So add in things like Jerry Jones trying to make it mandatory for players to stand for the anthem while getting the okay to cut those who protest, and things could get even uglier, especially if the players feel like McNair's beliefs about the players are universal among all owners.

An ESPN report published Friday detailed last week's conference in NY, saying McNair's comment "stunned some in the room".

McNair apologized to Vincent during the meeting, and issued another apology after his remarks became public on Friday.

"I don't believe he is the only owner that feel that way. smh", Decoud tweeted. "In order to be an inmate, you're either in the hospital or prison". 'You're an inmate. We can't let you get out of line. We can't let you have your own beliefs. The league ultimately rejected Trump's call for protesting players to be punished.

"Some people comment on my post, saying, 'it's just a figure of speech.' I mean, agree or disagree, figure of speeches aren't okay in 2017", Green said.

Kaepernick, who remains a free agent, is expected to attend next week's meeting between players and owners.

The Texans are 3-3 this season, and host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
