Amazon now wants to leave deliveries inside your metro Detroit home

Amazon has announced a new service that would allow delivery people to unlock your front door and leave packages inside your home.

Amazon says the delivery drivers are "thoroughly vetted". The locks - provided by Yale - are available in a variety of finishes to compliment most doors.

Amazon Key launches in a number of cities in the U.S., but if it's successful it's easy to see it coming to the UK. You can give friends or family temporary, recurring, or permanent access to your home and also allow other service employees, such as dog walkers, cleaners, and others, into the home on certain dates and times.

The old-school method of leaving a key underneath your doormat is inconvenient and often anxiety-inducing, so Amazon believes its new lock-and-camera system will make accessing your home when you're not around more secure.

When the delivery person arrives, they will knock, and then scan the package to a Wi-Fi connected lock. The process will not require codes and the entire delivery will be video-recorded. Note, only Prime-eligible items can be delivered in-home.

In the spirit of competition, Walmart recently announced a similar product that allows delivery people to drop off packages or stock their customers' fridges with food purchased from Walmart.com. So she orchestrates the preparations remotely-using the Amazon Key app on her phone to let in a cleaning crew and a courier delivering her mom's present.

Amazon says customers should not worry about the safety of their home. The upbeat Pixar-esque jazz soundtrack and Buster Keaton comedy all makes it seem like giving Amazon access to your front door and using one of its cameras to monitor your home is no big deal.
