Sheriff's spokesman: 2 killed on Grambling State campus

Campus Shooting

A manhunt is underway for a suspect who shot and killed two men at Grambling State University in Louisiana. The Lincoln Parish Sheriff's Office is the lead agency in the investigation.

"Nothing that anyone would've ever needed to have happened", Sutton said in an on-camera proclamation early Wednesday.

Grambling State University Media Relations Director Will Sutton told news outlets that one of the victims was a Grambling senior, Earl Andrews, and the other was Monquiarius Caldwell, both 23 and from Farmerville, Louisiana. The local sheriff's department has taken over the investigation from campus police.

A gunman is at large following a shooting at Grambling State University, which occurred just after midnight on Wednesday.

"It's a awful thing to happen on any day of the week, any week", Sutton said.

The Washington Post reports that the murders have "shaken the campus, a small community of 5,188 mostly black students, where the loss of a student is 'truly a loss of a member of a family, ' said Richard J. Gallot Jr., the university's president". We always encourage our students to be safe, be aware, watch who they hang out with, and watch who is around at all times. Students were not put on lockdown, but were urged to stay inside and pay attention to surroundings. "This is a most unfortunate situation".

Authorities were alerted to the shooting by a female student, who called the University's police chief, on his mobile phone, said Sutton.
