Singapore to limit number of cars on road

The Guardian reports that the growth cap for passenger cars and motorcycles will be cut from 0.25% a year to zero from February 2018 according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

Cars ply the roads in downtown Singapore.

Singapore is a city of 5.6 million people packed into an area smaller than New York City. The supply is limited, and certificates are distributed by auction.

The body noted that the change is necessary as Singapore faces "limited scope for further expansion of the road network", with roads making up 12% of Singapore's land area.

Bloomberg reports the current going rate for the smallest vehicles is more than 30,000 USA dollars-that's only for the permit-not the price of the auto.

Every vehicle purchased in Singapore requires a certificate of entitlement (COE), which lasts 10 years.

Come February next year, the city-state will no longer allow any new vehicles into the country, citing land shortage and overcrowded roads.

From the inception of the certificate of entitlement quota system in 1990 until 2009, Singapore restricted vehicle growth to 3.0 per cent annually. The island city-state also vowed to invest heavily in public transportation to help the city's growing population get around.

Singapore, whose population of 5.56 million has grown almost 40% since 2000, tightly controls the ownership and sale of vehicles through a bidding process and an annual growth rate that caps the total number of vehicles on the city-state's roads.

It is very expensive to own a auto in Singapore.

Government statistics show the number of private vehicles fell from 540,063 in 2013 to 504,160 in 2016.

Reuters reports a mid-range auto in Singapore typically costs four times the price in the United States.

Thanks to the high cost of vehicles, Singapore has mostly avoided the crushing traffic jams that are common in other Asian cities and authorities want to keep things that way.
