Porsche presents mainstream 911 for purists

Porsche 911 Carrera T revealed as pared-back special

Available to order now prior to a planned start to United Kingdom deliveries in January, the new 911 Carrera T is differentiated from its standard sibling by a number of subtle exterior styling changes, including an altered front bumper with a more prominent splitter element, grey metallic exterior mirror housings, 20-inch alloy wheels, reworked slats within the engine lid and centrally mounted tailpipes pained in black.

Buyers can get the auto in lava orange, guards red, racing yellow, white, and Miami blue. It's a regular production model, unlike the 911 R, so demand won't surpass supply.

Channeling the purism of the original 911 T of 1968, the Carrera T is anything but a luxurious continent crosser; it's a pared-down, purpose-focused Sunday morning hooligan tool, with less weight, shorter gearing for explosive acceleration and rear-wheel drive only via a traditional mechanical limited-slip differential. The Sport Chrono Pack's driving mode switch on the steering wheel is fitted as standard, but not the trademark clock/lap-timer, Porsche spec-spotters will note.

In the same pursuit of sporting purity and instantaneous performance, the vehicle comes without rear seats (but if you ask nicely, Porsche will reinstall them at no extra cost), nor does it offer much, if anything, in terms of sound deadening.

Porsche has expanded the already-extensive 911 range with this - the new 911 Carrera T.

Improved power-to- weight ratio plus enhanced performance The six-cylinder flat engine with a displacement of three litres and twin turbocharging generates an output of 370 hp and a maximum torque of 331 lb.ft., delivering between 1,750 rpm and 5,000 rpm. Now, the standard 911 Carrera is receiving the T treatment. The result is a kerb weight of 1425kg, some 20kg less than the standard Carrera. To cut weight the conventional door openers have been replaced by door opener loops.

Inside is quite refined with black sports seats with "911" stitched into the headrest, GT sports leather steering wheel and contrasting colour trim for the seats, seatbelts and door finish. The sprint from zero to 60 miles per hour takes 4.3 seconds with the manual gearbox, and four seconds flat with the automatic and the launch control system engaged. Shortened gear lever, seat centers made of Sport-Tec material.

The first deliveries of available new items is scheduled for March 2018. Both transmissions enable a top speed of over 290 km/h.
