Eighth Child Reported Dead From IKEA Dresser Malfunction

8th child reported killed by recalled Ikea dresser

In total, 29 million dressers and chests were recalled by Ikea, and the recall encompass a variety of styles.

Ikea consumers are entitled to a full refund for recalled chests and dressers manufactured between January 2002 and June 2016.

The recall affects children's chests and dressers taller than 23.5 inches and adult chests and dressers taller than 29.5 inches that do not meet the performance requirements of the US voluntary industry standard.

Jozef Dudek, 2, was killed when a three-drawer Ikea Malm dresser fell on him in California in May 2017. The father returned to the room to discover the Ikea dresser had toppled over, with the toddler underneath of it.

It is unclear how numerous 29 million dressers have been either repaired, returned or destroyed.

"Most by far of buyers don't secure these dressers to the divider and it has for some time been our view that furniture steadiness ought to be incorporated with a dresser and mooring ought to be an auxiliary strategy for securing furniture".

Ikea offered an apology to the Dudek's for the death of their toddler.

The family's legal advisor, Alan M. Feldman, said the mishap happened in May and the kid was unsupervised at the time.

The company reportedly went on to say, "the initial investigation indicates that the chest involved in this incident had not been properly attached to the wall". "IKEA urges all consumers to securely attach chests to the wall with the hardware included in every IKEA chest of drawers package".

Ikea settled with the families for £38 million ($50m) in December past year. The settlement money is said to have been divided among the three families.

An IKEA Malm dresser that can tip over when a toddler opens one of the drawers and tries to climb on it has led to another death. The redesign was executed to ensure that the retailer's furniture met the voluntary American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) stability standards.

Mann, whose firm represented three of these families, said more deaths could occur if these products aren't taken out of homes completely.

Ikea argued, in an official statement, that they spread news of the recall to the best of their abilities, stating that they used social media, email campaigns, national news stories, and their website to inform their customers.

"What makes this death more heartbreaking is the fact that last year's so-called recall was poorly publicized by IKEA and ineffective in getting these defective and unstable dressers out of children's bedrooms", Feldman continued.

After the third child was killed in February 2016 - a 22-month-old boy from Minnesota - the company finally issued a full recall that June.
