Air, Water Pollution Kills Millions across the Globe

Pollution killed 9mn people in a year 2.5mn in India – study

Brunei and Sweden had the lowest numbers of pollution-related deaths. Based largely on 2015 data from the Global Burden of Disease, the report estimates that at least 9 million premature deaths were caused during the year by diseases from toxic exposure. Of any single country, India bears the brunt with 2.5 million people killed by pollution in 2015, followed by China with 1.8 million. "It is a thorough threat, affecting many elements of human health and well-being", said Philip Landrigan, professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, United States, who led the study, on Friday (10/20/2017).

Dirty air, caused by everything from vehicle fumes and industry to indoor fires, was the biggest contributor resulted in 6.5 million deaths, he said.

World leaders have been urged to take pollution more seriously after the worldwide group of scientists concluded that it was killing nine million people a year.

Nearly all these deaths occurred in low and middle income countries, where pollution could account for up to a quarter of deaths. Its dangers lie in respiratory and heart diseases including lung cancer, which can develop from long-term exposure.

On Diwali celebration, air pollution levels in India have spiked the bursting of firecrackers on Diwali.

While developed countries are far from immune from the hazards, their form of pollution are more "modern", like fossil fuel combustion and chemicals, while developing countries have biomass fuels.
