Google Adds ESET Malware Detection to Chrome

Google Chrome, the web browser, is also now an anti-virus software for your Windows computer. Chief among these changes is a major revision to the Chrome Cleanup engine, which is used to detect and remove unwanted software before restoring Chrome's settings back to how they were prior to the installation, in partnership with security specialist ESET.

Chrome Cleanup is included with the latest version of Google Chrome and will be rolled out over the next few days.

Google says it recently completed a full redesign of the entire tool, which is now more straightforward to use via clearer popups that appear when Chrome detects something wrong.

ESET, a leading cybersecurity company, has partnered with Google to launch "Chrome Clean-up", a new scanner and cleaner software for Google Chrome created to help users browse the web safely and without interruption.

Some extensions may change your settings without notifying the user. Or at the very least, cut down on frantic tech support calls from less tech-savvy family members and friends wondering why Google search isn't working anymore.

Meanwhile, the Chrome Cleanup Tool has been upgraded with better unwanted software detection and removal. To counter that, the Chrome Cleanup feature alerts users when it detects unwanted software and offers a quick way to remove the software and return Chrome to its default settings.

Google chose to integrate ESET's malware detection engine directly into Chrome.

The more powerful aspect of this new Chrome Cleanup comes through a collaboration with cybersecurity company ESET. As pointed out by Android Police, Google Chrome is a performance hog and is notorious for eating up RAM. Google is not positioning it as a "general-purpose antivirus". "The scans are being run periodically and the focus here is on remediation - system cleanup and restoring settings to known good state". You will need to click on the details button find out exactly what's being considered harmful and what will be removed by the tool.
