South Korea claims North hacked nuclear attack response plans

North Korea hackers steal South Korea war plans

The U.S. flew the two B-1B Lancer bombers over the peninsula along with South Korean F-15k fighter planes and additional fighters from Japan, which the U.S. military said was the first such nighttime maneuver conducted by the three countries together.

Some of the hacked data addressed how to identify movements of members of the North Korean leadership, how to seal off their hiding locations, attack from the air before eliminating them, the lawmaker had said.

North Korea did not conduct any launches or tests on Tuesday's anniversary.

The exercises came hours after a South Korean lawmaker claimed North Korean hackers had stolen a large cache of military documents from his country, "including a plan to assassinate North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, and wartime contingency plans drawn up by the US and South Korea", reports the BBC.

The hackers broke into the computer networks of South Korea's defense ministry previous year and pilfered classified military documents that detailed military operations in case war broke out on the Korean peninsula, South Korea's state news agency Yonhap reported.

While North Korea was not able to hack USA power companies, there are concerns among some of observers that the regime may attempt to damage the power grid by detonating a nuclear device at a high altitude above the US, triggering an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). "What I am going to tell you is that the [South Korea]-US alliance, that bilateral entity, is there to deal with those types of situation and safeguard against them".

In a pair of tweets sent Saturday afternoon, Trump said past agreements with North Korea have all been violated. This positive process is worth a try", said an editorial in the state mouthpiece Global Times, following yesterday's military exercises."War would be a nightmare for the Korean Peninsula and surrounding regions.

The White House said Tuesday that Trump and his national security team were briefed and discussed "a range of options to respond to any form of North Korean aggression or, if necessary, to prevent North Korea from threatening the United States and its allies with nuclear weapons".

Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam will hold strategic talks with visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan on October 18 in Seoul, according to Seoul's foreign ministry.

The U.S. has been pursuing a strategy of "maximum pressure" on North Korea, applying diplomatic and economic pressure multilaterally and unilaterally.

The mission was the latest show of force to North Korea after its long-range intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests and hydrogen bomb test that have ratcheted tensions with the United States.
