Catalan president lives outside law - Spain's deputy prime minister
The far-left party CUP says Catalonia's regional parliament will consider a declaration of independence from Spain on Monday. What would Madrid's reaction be, and what of the consequences?
Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont has indicated the region will formally declare independence. He's the one who decides when to press the "nuclear button" of an independence declaration.
Despite calls from the Spanish government and the worldwide community to hold off the Independence referendum votes, the Catalan leader went ahead and conducted the banned referendum which eventually resulted in highhandedness from Spanish Police.
Puigdemont appears to want global mediation to be given a chance before he presses the button. No one, however, seems keen to recognize Europe's newest state.
There were also reports that the central government would approve a decree law on Friday to make it easier for companies to change their domicile, without calling a shareholders' meeting.
Puigdemont has not explained the scope of his proposal for global mediation, whether it would envisage a compromise short of independence or deal only with divorce arrangements.
The Catalan government has given scant details as to how it would handle matters such as security, border and airspace control, finances and health.
"I expect the auction results to be weak given the conflict over Catalonia", said DZ Bank strategist Sebastian Fellechner.
In a rare address to the nation on Tuesday, the Spanish monarch, King Felipe said Sunday's vote was illegal and unconstitutional. Above all, it must provide a legal framework that embraces the cultural and linguistic specificity of Catalonia and protects its self-government from political sways elsewhere in Spain.
But the government statement late Wednesday said there could be no mediation unless Puigdemont backs down. Her party lost a legally binding referendum on Scottish independence from the United Kingdom in 2014 - the terms of which were hammered out between both sides.
And Madrid could be preparing to take severe measures, at least on the judicial front. The Catalans seem more and more determined to separate, and Madrid is increasingly reluctant to do so.
Catalonia's regional government is mulling when to declare the region's independence from Spain in the wake of a disputed referendum that has triggered Spain's most serious national crisis in decades.
The most extreme measure would be applying article 155 of the Constitution, which allows the central government to implement the "necessary measures" to force a dissenting region into complying. The remaining percentage are said to be in favor of remaining under Spain.
"I don't remember any of these people referring to the sacredness of constitutions and sovereignty of existing states when it came to the breakup of Yugoslavia", said Kevin Ovenden, British author and political activist. Spain has protested the movie, which has ignited tension.
Indeed, the European Commission announced shortly after its initial statement on Catalonia that it would be pursuing legal action against the Hungarians in order to overturn a new NGO law, which will require foreign-funded "civil society" organisations campaigning in the country to list their big overseas backers on a public register.
The injuries to people occurred as riot police stormed voting stations to stop the referendum on independence from Spain.
