Indian liquor mogul Vijay Mallya arrested in United Kingdom for second time

Vijay Mallya arrested in UK in ED money laundering case gets bail

Mallya, who owes over Rs 9,000 crore to various Indian banks, has been living in self-imposed exile in Britain since March 2016.

The 61-year-old liquor baron, wanted in India for defaulting on loans, was arrested on Tuesday morning British time, Doordarshan reported.

However, the CBI had submitted extradition request in respect of Mallya regarding the case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860 and Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 for his extradition from the United Kingdom.

“I have not eluded any court.

Outside the courtroom, Mallya said that has "done nothing wrong" and described the allegations against him as "fabricated". CPS in a statement has confirmed the liquor baron has been arrested under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMA) in relation to ongoing proceedings. In the same month, India revoked Mallya's diplomatic passport and his worldwide travel was also banned, according to The Indian Express.

CBI and the ED have separately filed charge sheets against him.

This is the second time that the London police has arrested Mallya. The charges are part of an investigation into defaults of loans worth around Rs9,000 crore by Mallya's defunct Kingfisher Airlines Ltd.

Chief Magistrate Emma Louise Arbuthnot has been hearing Mallya's extradition case at Westminster Magistrates' Court on his previous arrest warrant executed by Scotland Yard in April.

April 2015 - To recover the funds, Mumbai International Airport sold Vijay Mallya's personal aircraft for Rs 22 lakh. The next hearing is scheduled for November 20. The money laundering charge and the evidence in support has been joined to the original fraud charges.

They did so on the basis of a formal request that Indian authorities had submitted to Britain in February.
