Macklemore to donate proceeds from Same Love to marriage equality campaign

However, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has again defended the NRL's decision to have U.S. rapper Macklemore perform his pro-same-sex-marriage anthem "Same Love" at Sunday's grand final.

The criticism has been led by former prime minister, Tony Abbott, and Liberal senator, Eric Abetz.

Conservative politicians and pundits are outraged that Macklemore plans to sing his pro-marriage equality anthem, Save Love, at Sunday's event.

"Sport is sport!" Abbott, a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage, wrote in tweeting the petition from retired NRL player Tony Wall.

On Wednesday, Mr Abbott tweeted that rugby league fans "shouldn't be subjected to a politicised grand final".

"I don't think trying to censor the playlist at halftime entertainment, is certainly not my role and I look forward to it".

But Immigration Minister Peter Dutton backed his former leader, saying bodies like the NRL needed to get a "backbone" and stand up to political correctness.

"I think that is what music has the power to do- is not divide people- but create an environment where people can start a debate, can have a conversation, bring a message to the forefront", Macklemore told Nine New Sydney upon his arrival in Australia.

His remarks add to the ongoing war of words between the "yes" and "no" camps ahead of a national survey on whether Australia should legalise same-sex marriage.

'I'm gonna go harder, ' he added.

Ironically, the controversy helped the track move to the top of the iTunes chart in Australia this week.

Currently, same-sex marriage is not legal but the government will use the results to make their decision on whether or not they will be holding a parliamentary vote on same-sex marriage later this year, according to Business Insider.

'Pink, who's one of my favourite artists, I think she's a wonderfully talented singer released a song condeming George Bush and I didn't much like that at the time, but I didn't think it should be banned from radio, ' he said.

"Same Love" topped the Australian music charts for four weeks back in 2012, and the renewed attention sent it to No 1 on the Australian iTunes charts overnight.
